Glendale & Los Angeles Estate Planning Law Firm

My work in probate matters encompasses both administration and litigation. I discuss my general approach to litigation on another page, and those remarks apply equally here.

The most recent amendments to the law mean that most estates fall below the threshold for paying estate taxes: approximately $5 million or less for a single person and $10 million or less for a married couple.

If it’s not about saving taxes, why do an estate plan at all? First, it gives peace of mind to know that the people you care about most won’t have to sort through a tangle of problems when you die or if you become incapacitated. Continuity and stability loom large when the rest of the world around you is in turmoil. By itself, that’s enough reason to take the time to work with an experienced lawyer to put things in good order.

Efficiency and stability only skim the surface of what a good estate plan can be. The notion of leaving a “legacy” has a larger meaning. It is the opportunity to consider how your spouse, children, other family members, friends, schools, churches or charities have enriched your life. The documents created in response to that reflection can have a more lasting impact than just dividing up the available income and assets.
My approach to estate planning gives attention to this ethical dimension of giving. I use a variety of resources to help you say something to each beneficiary that can serve as a statement of the values that underlie each gift. We want the best for those who come after us. By stating your personal approach to what comprises a “good life,” you make your plan more than just an exercise in distributing money.

I enjoy the interactive process of developing these personalized statements to fold into the more technical requirements of clear and effective estate planning documents. If you want someone who will just fill out the forms, I can do that. But if you are looking for counsel that attends to these more heartfelt concerns, please contact me to arrange an appointment.
